A black coat, a black top hat. The wardrobe, as ever, is impeccable. But beneath it — where a face ought to be — hangs a long, pink lump of meat, swaying heavily forward and back with every step. Frankly, it is hideous.
At the tip of its head, a single great eye, which rolls about as the creature pleases. Around it, smaller eyes are clustered like fruit on a branch, each twitching off in its own direction. What manner of view it lives by — even I cannot say.
In the house, it plays at being the doting head of the family. To put on gentlemanly airs with a face like that takes considerable nerve. And yet — its kindness does not seem entirely welcome.
Its voice comes slow, gurgling as if drowning in sludge. Yet run it through the translator, and out come words gone strangely poetic, strangely literary. To feign refinement on the inside as well — that I cannot abide. No matter. Before it ever lifts its eyes to me, I have already looked first.
