Very tall. A green sheath, a top hat, a white ribbon. At a glance, a slender sort of plant — but no. Peer in close, and the outline runs soft and shapeless. In short: a great slime in fine clothes. The wardrobe, at least, recalls a certain gentleman.
The lord of a territory, apparently. But what, exactly, is the point of being large? Stretch up that far, and all you'll see is the sky above the treetops. — Ah, and: its sense of taste is needlessly refined.
It has a name. 'Shujulla,' they say. Written down, it is nothing remarkable. Spoken aloud, however, it grates on the nerves for reasons I can't quite place. The residents have given up and call it by nicknames, as they please — Suzu, Juju, little La. How very free of them.
Only one may stay large within a territory. Now and then it divides itself, and makes more of the small ones — shulime. The small obey the large. Probably. But observe: the large one stands alone, while the small ones only multiply. A gathering of small things will, in the end, swallow the large. ...As for the rumor that a shulime grows tall once it leaves the territory — I shall pretend I never heard it.
